Concert for Computer Network

Concert for Computer Network is a work for distributed networked laptop ensemble. It is at the same time a music composition, a piece of distributed computer software and a collective improvisation practice.

The performers develop the music together and use the network system to explore new ways to connect with each other through collective music making.

Both the software and the work have been developed by Andreja Andric during 2019. The software combines and synchronises the individual music lines of different performers into one music flow, eliminating network delays over long-distance networks. This makes it possible for the Ensemble to perform together in precise synchronisation without having to be in the same place.

Certain aspects of the composition are built into the software itself. Some other aspects are free and the musicians can improvise and explore within the limitations and possibilities that the software provides.

The performance consists of fast and intense loops of synthesised sound. The music explores variation, repetition and dependencies between harmony and sound colour in natural (non-tempered) scales and low (1-bit) sound resolution.

The performers are: Malgorzata Zurada (located in Zurich, CH), Maja Bosnic (located in Belgrade, RS), Anders Visti (located in Aarhus, DK) and Andreja Andric (located in Aarhus, DK).

Andreja Andric is a Serbian composer and programmer, living in Aarhus in Denmark. He enjoys playful exploration of mathematical processes and chance, and uses computer programming as key means of artistic expression.

Malgorzata Zurada is an interdisciplinary artist currently based in Zurich (CH). She develops her works from esoteric theories and rituals of past and present. Her main interests are visual languages connected to various belief systems and means of coding the occult knowledge.

Maja Bosnić is a composer and performer from Belgrade. In her music, she re-questions and examines accustomed phenomena in the process of music making, exposes them to concepts of every-day life, then resets them in compositions that often include active audience participation.

Anders Visti. Visual artist working with code. Founder and editor of the printed web publication ‡ DobbeltDagger and initiator of !=null, a public forum for artists, researchers, developers and hackers using contemporary technology for creative expression and aesthetic inquiry.
